Glenn Emery Berry

July 25, 1931 — September 9, 2021

Glenn Emery Berry, age, 90, entered into rest on September 9, 2021 at his residence in Mankato. He was born July 25, 1931, in Scandia, Kansas to Clara Buer Berry and Emery Berry. Glenn received his education in the Scandia Public Schools, graduating in 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers; Darrel Berry (Dorothy) (d. 1966), Blaine Berry (Wilma) (d. 1978) and 2 sisters; Dorthy Berry Keener (Rollie) (d. 1999), Kay Elkins (Bud) (d. 2018) and is survived by his sister, Sonja Berry Scarrow (Lynn) (d. 2019) and his brother-in-law Bud Elkins, along with many nieces and nephews. Upon graduating he enlisted in the U.S. Army and went through basic training at Ft. Riley, KS and was sent to Japan where he was assigned to the 35th Infantry Division. He was stationed at Camp Otsu in west central part of the province of Honshu. While serving there the Korean War broke out and he was immediately sent to Korea along with his division where he served 5 campaigns. Returning to Ft. Riley, he finished his enlistment as a very tough Platoon Sgt., training his company to be prepared for the war he was just engaged in. After his discharge he worked at many menial jobs. He worked six months at a smelter in Denver, CO and 7 years at a packing house in Omaha, NE. He then joined the Omaha Police Dept. where he spent 27 years, retiring as a Sgt. He was a mentor to several officers and remained friends with them over the years. He also worked for 9 years as an intermittent deputy U.S. Marshal. After retiring he moved to Mankato to be near family. Glenn was a great storyteller and deemed it necessary for his sisters, nieces and nephews to know about the Korean War. He would not share his personal experiences about the war but did not want the history to be forgotten. He would also share with the younger generation family stories, and his experiences as a policeman and U.S. Marshall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 1-7 pm, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 pm at the Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kansas. Glenn’s wishes were to be cremated and a Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m., on Monday, September 20, 2021 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, Kansas with Pastor Dennis Beckmann officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. Military Honors will be conducted by the Big Red One, Ft. Riley, Kansas at the Mount Hope Cemetery.
