Edith L. Love

Edith Leola (Applegarth) Love was born April 30, 1933 in rural Washington County, Kansas. She died September 17th, 2018 in her Home at Summer Vista Assisted Living in Pensacola, Florida. She was 85-years-old.

Edith was one of 14 children born to John and Ruby (Boston) Applegarth. Edith loved telling the stories of her childhood adventures from growing up on the farm with a large family. She met and fell in love with her pen pal, Robert Love. The two were married on May 31, 1953. To this union was born four children, Larry, Joyce, Patricia, and Nancy. Edith led a busy life farming and cooking. She served many students and faculty during her 32 years as a cook for the Mankato Schools. Later in life she enjoyed golfing, bowling, quilting, and playing her harmonica.

Edith is preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, as well as her husband Robert and children Larry and Nancy. She is survived by her daughters: Joyce (Bruce) Whitaker of Inglis, Florida and Patti Burkhart of Pensacola, Florida. Seven grandchildren: Morgan (Andy) Whitaker-Smith of Lakeland, Florida, Brett (Whitney) Whitaker of Hays, Kansas, Chelsea Whitaker of Boston, Massachusetts, Kelly (Lawrence) Bradshaw of Hays, Kansas, Tella (Brandon) Nimz of Hays, Kansas, Jennifer (Farhat) Burkhart-Mehmood of Pensacola, Florida, and Brandy (Jerod) Johnson on Waco, Nebraska. Edith also has 5 great-grandchildren. She is survived by 9 siblings and many nieces and nephews.

The celebration of life service will be Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 3:00 p.m., at the Christian Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating.  Mrs. Pat Grout provided the music, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle sang – “Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art”.  Casket Bearers were:  Austin Eilert, Fred Eilert, Phillip Esslinger, Luke Wagner, Lloyd Johnson, Sr., and Mark Turner.  Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas.  The family will receive friends, Friday, September 21, 2018 from 4:00 p.m., to 6:00 p.m. at the Melby Mortuary.  Memorials are suggested to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund in care of the mortuary.
