Doyle "Hooley" H. Alcorn

April 19, 1925 — January 5, 2023

Doyle “Hooley” Homer Alcorn was born April 19, 1925, to Bert and Lula (Rose) Alcorn at his grandparent’s home in Ionia, Kansas. He passed away January 5, 2023, in Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 97 years.

He attended grade school at rural Harmony and Ionia, and he graduated with the Ionia High School class of 1943. Hooley enlisted in the Army when he turned 18 years old. His engineering unit was a part of the Battle of the Bulge, as well as serving in England, France, and Germany. Upon his discharge, he began working for the newly formed Rural Electrification Association in Ionia. In 1987, he retired from the Mankato office after 40 plus years as line superintendent.

Hooley and Barbara VanWey were married April 6, 1952, and two children were born to this union, Debra Ann and Jack Doyle. Barbara passed away in 1992, and he married Patricia Hall in 1998.

Always active in his community, Hooley brought boy’s Pee Wee baseball to Mankato, served as a volunteer fireman, officiated many high school sports, served as a City Councilman, was a charter member of the Mankato Golf and Country Club, a VFW member, charter member of the Jewell Co. Historical Society, and one of the Jewell Co. Threshing Bee originators. While he served as a Jewell Co. Commissioner, he also sat on several state boards.

He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Barbara, brothers Gordon and Kenneth Alcorn, sister Monsolete Trubey, and granddaughter Jessica Alcorn.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Pat of the home, children Debra Taddiken (Mark) of Clifton, Kansas, and Jack Alcorn (Shirley) of Mankato; three step children, Kevin and Klay Hall of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Kelli Hall Burnett of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Hooley is also survived by his grandchildren; Joe Alcorn (Caitlin) of Eugene, Oregon; Tawnya Johnson (Adam) of Lawrence, Kansas; Stevan Alcorn (Katie) of Kiefer, Oklahoma; Chrisinthia Alcorn Archambeau of Narka, Kansas; Bria Taddiken Williams (Justin) of Manhattan, Kansas; Shawn Taddiken (Nicolette) of Clifton, Kansas; step grandchildren; Josh Hall of Little Rock, Arkansas; Ashley Burnett of Little Rock, Arkansas; Michael, Auston, Abigail and Tim Hall; 15 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Monday, January 9, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato. Burial with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, rural Mankato.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 8, from 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm, with family greeting friends from 4pm – 6pm, at Melby Mortuary in Mankato.

Memorials are requested to the Jewell Co. Threshing Bee, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
