Richard R. "Dick" Waugh

Richard R. (Dick) Waugh, 84, Mankato, Kansas, passing Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Jewell County Hospital with his beloved family at his bedside. He was born May 11, 1926, in Milford, Nebraska, son of John R. and Sarah A. (Nicholson) Waugh.

Richard graduated from Mankato High School in 1944. In December 1944, he enlisted in Merchant Marines. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Richard married Mildred Joan Blacker on November 13, 1949, in Mankato, KS. The couple lived on the family farm north of Mankato until moving into Mankato in 2000. Richard farmed with his father and through the years also worked for Coop, Farm Bureau, Mankato Welding, and Hills Construction. He retired in 1991, as a heavy equipment operator for Jewell County Road Department.

Richard was an active member of the Jewell County Historical Society. His passion was collecting antique Oliver tractors.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Joan, of the home; sons, Gerald and Carl (Carla), Mankato; daughter, Gayle Waugh, Gillette, Wyoming. Grandchildren, Nick and Nathan Hadle Gillette, Wyoming; Kerry Waugh, Manhattan, Kansas; Jeremy Waugh, Gardner, Kansas; Jennifer Urbaniak (Vincent) and Ryan Waugh, all of Mankato; great-granddaughter, Kaylee Hadle, Gillette, Wyoming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mige Farris, grandson, Joshua Hadle, daughter-in-law, Lorie Waugh, and step-brother, Dean Heglin.

The service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010, at Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Tessa Zehring officiating. Organist was Mrs. Pat Grout and soloist was Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, who sang "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden" Casket bearers were: Nick Hadle, Nathan Hadle, Jeremy Waugh, Ryan Waugh, Vincent Urbaniak, and Brad Colin. Honorary casket bearers were: Harold Shoemaker, Howard Hermann, Don Durant, Earl Buckley, Earl Varney, and William "Bill" Logan. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, with Full Military Honors provided by the United States Navy. Arrangements are being made through Melby Mortuary, Mankato.
