Vera F. (Logan) Reed

Vera F. (Logan) Reed was born May 10, 1914, at Formoso, Kansas, to William Finley and Lillian May (Robinson) Logan, and died Sunday, August 1, 2010, at her home in Formoso, Kansas, at the age of 96 years, 2 months, and 21 days.

Vera was the middle child of seven, and lived most of he life in Formoso, and two years in Hardy, Nebraska. She graduated from Formoso High School in 1933, and later married Frances L. Reed on March 8, 1936, at Formoso, Kansas. To this union one daughter was born, Nancy.

She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, and Formoso Library Club. Vera was a person who loved to cook. She helped her mother in the kitchen and could cook anything she was given. Her pies were a community favorite. In the glory days of Formoso, Vera could be found working on community projects with her sister, Anita. She enjoyed the children at the Formoso Skating Rink. Vera had a green thumb, whatever she put into the ground, grew, and she had very lovely flowers.

Vera was “just Mother,” she made everybody feel at home and welcome.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frances; her parents; her brothers – William and Charles; and her sisters – Ruth Logan, Anita Switzer, Lillian Dieckman, and Irene Park.

Vera is survived by her daughter, Nancy and husband, Jack Higbee of Formoso; three grandchildren – Michael Higbee, Jeannea Higbee, and Christel Nelson; four great-grandchildren – Maccaela, Mable, Cheyenne, and Jackie; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service for Vera F. Reed will be (was) Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Melby Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Interment will be (was) in the Balch Cemetery, Formoso. The family suggests memorials to: Jewell County Meals on Wheels, Formoso Community Church, or Formoso Community Library in care of the Mortuary.
