Norman Neil Smith

Norman Neil Smith, age 84, died quietly in his sleep June 19, 2015 in Broomfield, Colorado. Norman was born October 19, 1931 to Thompson Ray Smith and Gladys Maude (Nelson) Smith in Esbon, Kansas. After graduating from Esbon High School, Norman began working for Montgomery Ward in the Denver, Colorado area.

He then entered the United States Navy and served in combat operations during the Korean War on the destroyer U.S.S. Sutherland. After his military service, Norman returned back to work with Montgomery Ward in the Denver area and stayed employed with them until his retirement.

Norman always felt a strong connection to Esbon, Kansas as his home. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing pool. He was always proud of his family and his military service. He kept deep convictions of his faith with God. Until becoming ill he was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sylvia A. (Young) Smith; daughter Marla A. Yarde and her husband Curtis Yarde of Colorado. A son, Michael Thompson Smith and sister, Norine L. (Smith) Hajny preceded him in death.

There will be a graveside service at the Esbon Cemetery on Thursday June 25, 2015 at 10:30am. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, 6:30 pm til 8:00 pm, at Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kansas. Memorials can be made to the Disabled American Veterans or Esbon United Methodist Church.
