January 26, 1918 — August 23, 2008

Aletha Marie (Reed) Logan was born January 26, 1918, to Dick and Millie (Freestead) Reed, in Jewell County, Kansas. She died August 23, 2008, at the Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care Unit in Mankato, Kansas. Aletha grew up south of Formoso, graduating from the eighth grade at Custer School. Being the oldest daughter in a family of eleven, Aletha, thereafter, was busy helping raise her younger siblings all who affectionally called her “Sis” throughout her life.

Aletha married William L. Logan on March 8, 1936. They farmed south of Formoso until 1944 when fire destroyed their home, requiring them to move northeast of Formoso, where they farmed until retiring and moving to Mankato in 1982. Aletha was a devoted mother and conscientious homemaker. She enjoyed doing embroidery, crocheting, and making quilts in her leisure time. While on the farm, she belonged to the neighborhood Laurel Hill Club. She was a member of the Mankato Christian Church and Gleaners Organization. In July, 2002, Aletha suffered a broken hip and in August of that year, a heart attack which led to her moving to Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care, where she resided the rest of her life.

Aletha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, “Bill” with whom she shared sixty-five years; grandson, William Dwayne Logan; brothers Dick Jr., Francis, Adna, and Floyd (Jack) Reed; sisters, Daisy Jensen and Fern Pair.

She is survived by her son, William R. and wife, Marie Logan; and daughter, Donna M. and husband, Lloyd C. Johnson, all of Mankato, Kansas; grandchildren Vicki M. and husband, Carl Cramer, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Cynthia L. Logan and friend, Carrol D. Ubel, Manhattan, Kansas; Lloyd W. Johnson, Mankato, Kansas, and Annmarie D. and husband Amory Neal of Parker, Colorado; great-grandchildren Luke W. Cramer, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Amory J. Neal of Parker, Colorado; brothers, Robert and wife, Joy of Kingman, Arizona, Donald and wife, Anna Margaret of Abilene, Kansas, and Howard and wife, Barbara of Rosehill, Kansas; sister Barbara White of Longmont, Colorado; sister-in-law, Vera Reed, Formoso, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of life service was held Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., at the Christian Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Music was performed by Ruth Clegg, organist, and Rosella Damon, soloist. Casket bearers were: Douglas Pair, David Jensen, Lloyd W. Johnson, Amory Neal, Doyle Reed, and Carrol Ubel. Interment was in the Balch Cemetery, Formoso, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to the Christian Church, or Jewell County Hospital Long-term Care, both of Mankato. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas , was in charge of arrangements.
