Carl Lee McElroy obituary

Carl Lee McElroy was born August 12, 1920, on a farm north of Randall, Kansas, to Ray Adolphus McElroy and Ena May (Stauffer) McElroy, and died June 28, 2008, at the Jewell County Hospital Long-term care, Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 16 days.

Carl graduated from Randall Rural High School in 1940, and started working for the Kansas Department of Transportation. He retired in 1982 after working 42 years.

August 2, 1942, Carl married Berneita Marie Smith at Mankato, Kansas. To this union two children were born, Sharon Ann and Warren Allen.

He was baptized January 27, 1952, into the Mankato Christian Church. He served as Sunday School secretary for 30 years. Carl was a Deacon and Elder of the church.

He was always there to help a neighbor or friend.

After retirement, Carl’s hobby was sharpening tools.

He was a 50 year member and past Master of Mankato Lodge 87 A.F. & A.M., and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Neita A. Hanson.

He is survived by his wife, Berneita, of 65 years; children, Sharon Ann Walton of Mankato, Kansas, and Warren Allen McElroy of Lakewood, California; two grandchildren, Rachel Ann Walton of Petersburg, Virginia, and Carrie Marie and husband Mark Burger of Zuni, Virginia; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Leah Burger and Sarah Jane Burger.

Celebration of life services for Carl L. “Jack” McElroy were held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 10:30 a.m., from the Mankato Christian Church, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating.
Music was provided by Ruth Clegg, organist, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, vocalist. Pall bearers were: Don Hamilton, Jerry Richecky, Roy Damon, Roger Lindberg, Dean Davis, and Willard Beckley. Interment was in Wallace Cemetery, Jewell, Kansas. Graveside services were preformed by Masonic Lodge, No. 87 A.F. & A.M., Mankato, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Mankato Christian Church or the Mankato City Park Equipment Fund. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, was in charge of arrangements.
