Mable Marihugh

August 28, 1910 — September 5, 2013

Mable Lovilla Marihugh, Esbon, Kansas, first child of John H. and Sarah Adilla Fenner Phillips, was born on a farm in the West Branch community south of Esbon, Kansas, August 28, 1910. She passed away at Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas on September 5, 2013 at the age of 103 years and 8 days. Mable attended West Branch Country School and graduated from Esbon High School in 1928. She was united in marriage on August 7, 1929 to Walter Lee Marihugh. Three children were born to this union: Edgar Carl, Gwendoyln Joy and Glenn E. They lived on a farm near Dentonia, Kansas. After the death of her husband, Mable moved to Esbon in 1970.
Mable was preceded in death by her parents , husband, daughter, sister Pauline Phillips and brother, Chester Phillips. Also a grandson, James Marihugh in 1976.
She is survived by her sons Edgar (Veronica Geisel) and Glenn (Shirley Hughes); grandchildren Kenneth Marihugh (Nancy), Linda Edwards (Stacey), David Stouffer, Brenda Seaman (Lon), Karen Loeffelman (Eduard); Sandra Zabel (Steven), Scott Marihugh, and Mark Marihugh (Kathy). Mable has 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Also, her sister, Vera Frost, Esbon, Kansas.
Mable was baptized in the Christian Church at Esbon, Kansas in 1926 and became a member of Dentonia Church of Christ in 1939. In 1998, she transferred her membership to the Church of Christ, Beloit, Kansas.
Mable was a member of the Jewell County EHU (later becoming the Odessa Homemaker’s Club) for 83 years. Except for a few years working for the U.S. government during World War II, Mable lived her entire life near and in Esbon. Mable’s favorite pastimes were crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, and baking pies for weekly family get-togethers at her home on Sunday afternoons. Her favorite scripture is from Psalm 4:8—“I will both lay me down in peace and sleep for the Lord only makest me dwell in safety.”
Visitation will be at Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas on Friday, September 6 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, at the Esbon United Methodist & Christian Church, followed by burial at the Odessa Cemetery.
