Glen Edward Stephens

This gathering today is to celebrate the life of our father, grandfather, and good friend, Glen Edward Stephens. He was born May 20, 1912, in Ionia, Kansas, to William M. Stephens and Alta G. (Cline) Stephens, both of whom preceded him in death. Glen’s residence at the time of his death was 203 East North, Mankato, Kansas 66956, where he had lived for many years.

Glen Stephens had been in poor health and passed away at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas, on January 7, 2008, at the age of 95 years and 8 months. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pearle (Gilmore) Stephens, who passed away August 5, 2001. Glen and Pearle attended the Mankato Christian Church.

Glen and Pearle adopted three children: Candy Schoonover of the home, Linda Collier of Aurora, Colorado, and Edward Stephens of Colby, Kansas; one grandson, Justin Schoonover of Hays, Kansas; and many foster children from the area.

Glen Stephens had sisters, Helen, Margaret, and Mary Belle; and brothers, Steve, Vern, and Merle. Of this family, Merle is alive and living in Geneva, Nebraska. With the possible exception of Mary Belle, whose last known address was Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the others are deceased.

Glen served in the Sea-Bees during World War II and later belonged to the V.F.W. and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He will be remembered by many.

A celebration of life service for Glen E. Stephens, was Friday, January 11, 2008. at 11:00 a.m. at the Christian Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Ruth Clegg, organist, and Mrs. Bobi Fogo, soloist. The hymns were: "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". The family suggests memorials to the Mankato Christian Church, Mankato, Kansas. Casket bearers and military honors were the United States Army Honor Guard, Ft. Riley, Kansas, and V.F.W. Post No. 7830, Mankato, Kansas. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Ionia Cemetery, Ionia, Kansas. Visitation was at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
