Darleen L. Sobers

December 16, 1920 — October 3, 2007

Darleen L. Sobers was one of three children, born December 16, 1920, on a farm near Webber, Kansas, to Dean Mifflin and Wilma Mercy (Neilson) Smith, and died October 3, 2007, at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska, at the age of 86 years, 9 months, and 27 days.

Darleen attended school and was a graduate of Webber High School. She went on to Normal Training and taught school for two years. When the war started, she worked for the Department of the Navy on maintenance and re-supplying ships, in California. After she retired from her job, she returned to Mankato, and made her home, to help take care of her father. Darleen was married to Rex Sobers, and he preceded her in death.

Darleen was active in the Harmony United Methodist Church, the Ladies circles of the church, Golden Years Club, Mankato Senior Center, and helped with meals as needed. Darleen was also active in the Garden Club.

Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers – Warren “Beefy” Smith, and Walter “Ole” Smith.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law – Mrs. Warren (Elaine) Smith of Racine, Wisconsin and Mrs. Walt (Darlene) Smith of Manhattan, Kansas; nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of life service for Darleen L. Sobers, was held Monday, October 8, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Tessa Zehring officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Pat Grout, organist, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, soloist. The songs were: “Amazing Grace” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand.” Casket bearers were: Ron Smith, Brit Feltner, Jim File, Scott Neilson,
Cal Berry, and Robert Switzer. Interment was in the Webber Cemetery, Webber, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to: Mankato Golden Years Club, or Harmony United Methodist Church, all of Mankato, Kansas. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
