Marcus A. Benson was born July 27, 1940, to Carl Marcus and H. Maxine (Christensen) Benson, at Scandia, Kansas, and died September 25, 2007, at the Carl T. Hayden Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 67 years, 1 month, and 28 days.

Marcus was baptized and confirmed in the Our Saviors Lutheran Church at Norway, Kansas. He attended Norway Grade School and was a graduate of the 1958 High School Class at Scandia. Marcus served in the United States Army from January, 1960, to March, 1962. He retired from M and M Jewelry Store in Grand Island, Nebraska, before moving to Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Marcus Benson and infant son, Christopher Wayne.

Marcus is survived by his wife, Marie Benson of Apache Junction, Arizona; mother, Maxine Benson of Mankato, Kansas; four daughters - Francie, Dawn, Teresa, and Michelle; four sons – Gregory, Robert, Mark Lee, and Steven; step-daughter – Jacqueline and husband, Shane; step-son – Patrick and wife, Laura; two sisters - Marjean and husband, Leonard Schroeder, and Susan and husband, Jack Bradrick; a brother – Richard, and wife Linda Benson; thirteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service for Marcus A. Benson was held Monday, October 1, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Steven Little officiating. Music was provided by Irene Ortman, pianist, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle, soloist. Hymns were “Amazing Grace,” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Ava Marie” as a recorded instrumental. Casket bearers were: Richard Benson, Shane Ross, Ron Fullerton, Keith Allen, Leonard Schroeder, and Shane Graf. Honorary casket bearers were: Robert Ham, Lynn Schiemer, Lorin Scholtes, and Mike Ensinger. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery, Scandia, Kansas, with military rites by Albert Isaacson, James Larson, Robert Sjolander American Legion Post No. 193, Scandia, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to Denali Estate Park, Apache Junction, Arizona. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
