Beverly Jean Clegg

Beverly Jean Clegg, 89, of Mankato, Kansas, was born December 15, 1922, on a farm north of Courtland, Kansas, in Republic County, on a snowy December morning to John Carl and Mary Elizabeth Schlutow. Beverly departed this life March 31, 2012, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital, in Superior, Nebraska.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents: sibling sister - Marie, Brother – James; twin sister – Dorothy; husband – Thayne; and son – J.C.

Beverly graduated from Belleville High School in 1941. Shortly thereafter, followed her older sister, Marie, to Long Beach, California, where she received training as a medical assistant and worked in a doctor’s clinic until the untimely death of her sister in 1945, at which time she returned to Kansas.

On September 14, 1947, she married Chester Thaine Clegg, and they made their home in Mankato, where two children were born – John Chester Clegg, and Dena Calene.

Beverly worked for the Camel Café and then later worked for many years for JE and Vivian Moon and the Mankato Greenhouse. Upon the closing of the Mankato Greenhouse, Beverly started a 30 year career as a housekeeper at the Jewell County Hospital, where she worked until she was 78 years, when a chronic disability required her to retire. In 2005, she returned as a resident of Long-term Care, at Jewell County Hospital and always felt like it was a second home to her. Beverly loved visiting with people and crocheting.

Beverly accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized in the Mankato Christian Church, April 19, 1943. Beverly served her Lord in many ways as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader and as a Christian Gleaner Organization President for many years.

Beverly is survived by daughter Dena and husband, Ramon Alvarez of Mankato, Knasas; daughter-in-law, Lois Clegg of Broomfield, Colorado; granddaughter, Denoya (Garman) and husband, Daniel Novovesky of Overland Park, Kansas; grandson, Neal and wife Hillary Clegg of Durham, North Carolina; granddaughter, Julie (Clegg) and husband Nick McCollum of Northglenn, Colorado; grandsons, Alex Alvarez of Mankato, Kansas, and Marcus Alverez of Potsdam, New York; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service for Beverly Clegg will be (was) held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012, at the Christian Church in Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Mrs. Pat Grout will be (was) the organist, and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle was the soloist and will sing (sang) "Precious Memories" and Beverly's grandsons, Daniel Novovsky played "Amazing Grace" on the piano. The congregation will sing (sang) : “How Great Thou Art”. Casket bearers will be (were): Gerry Waugh, Lloyd Johnson, Marvin Loomis, Rod Rose, Roger Lindberg, and Mike Liggett. Interment will be (was) in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas, beside her late husband, Thaine. Friends are invited to view and sign the book at the Melby Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, Kansas from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2012. Melby Mortuary was in charge of service arrangements..
