Homer Lewis Grubbs

Homer Lewis Grubbs was born Friday, September 9, 1927, to Homer W. and Mattie (Lewis) Grubbs at Burr Oak, Kansas, and died Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Webster County Hospital, Red Cloud, Nebraska, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 19 days.

He attended grade school at District 48, and graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1945. Homer was a farmer stockman.

In 1952, he was married to Anna Belle McDonnel in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They lived most of their married life west of Burr Oak. In 2007, they moved into the Mankato Housing.

Homer loved hot weather, all animals, fowl, ice cream, Burger King, and all types of sports. He enjoyed participating in horse shows and brought home many ribbons and trophies. Later his motorized scooter became his favorite horse. Homer hated cold weather, cruelty to animals, and when he became unable to walk.

He will be especially remembered for and enjoyed riding in parades on his horse portraying an Indian brave. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Lyle Jeffery.

Homer is survived by his wife of 59 ½ years, Anna Belle; a sister-in-law, Beth Jeffery of Superior, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, James McDonnel of Boston, Massachusetts; two nieces, Beverly and husband, Dwight Frost of Esbon, Kansas, and Debbie and husband, Mike Platt of Bluffton, South Carolina; nephew, Gale and wife, Kathleen Jeffery of Burr Oak, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service for Homer L. Grubbs will be (was) Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., First United Methodist Church, Burr Oak, Kansas, with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. Mrs. Gloria Garman-Schlaefli will be (was) the pianist, and Pastor Gerry Sharp, will play (played) the guitar and will sing (sang) “Amazing Grace”. Honorary bearers will be (were): John Tucker, Clifford Barnes, Merl Reed, Todd Jeffery, Cregg Jeffery, Gale Burgess, Jerry Heskett, and Don Anderson. Inurnment will follow (was) after the church service in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Kansas, next to his mother. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church, Burr Oak, Kansas. Service will be (were) under the direction of the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas.
