Martha Marie Morris

Martha Marie Morris was born at the family farm in Section 2, Ionia Township, Jewell County Kansas, on December 6, 1921, the youngest of eight children born to Carl and Oleanna Jensen Thronson.

Marie was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on July 28, 1935, and graduated from Mankato High School in 1939. On June 2, 1939, she married Elven “Jack” Morris in Concordia, Kansas. This marriage flourished for 64 years. Two daughters were born to this union—Karen Yvonne and Brenda Jean.

Marie was a homemaker. She had some out of the home jobs, including Jewell County Treasurer’s Office, Jewell County Under-sheriff, ASCS Office, Mankato High School Office, Waugh Oil and Gas Company, and Buffalo Roam Steakhouse.

Marie enjoyed dancing, bowling, golfing, playing bridge and other card games with family and friends, reading, working crossword puzzles and doing needlework. She was always ready to help her family. Marie and Jack shared their lives and it was very difficult for her when her partner was gone. They were a wonderful pair.

She enjoyed her five grandchildren and attended many school and church functions as they grew up, and continued the process with her great-grandchildren when possible.

Marie was a member of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, V.F.W. Auxiliary, Modern Minerva, and Mari-Octo Bridge Club.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, “Jack” on October 13, 2003; her sister Jessie Graham, and brothers Clarence, John, Ossie, Orville and Elmer.

She is survived by her daughter Karen and husband John Ross, Mankato, Kansas, and grandchildren Leah and husband Eric Pletcher, Drumoak Scotland; Karla and husband Mark Fleming, Formoso, Kansas; and Alan Ross, Farmington New Mexico.; daughter Brenda and husband Kent Enyeart, Mankato, Kansas, and grandsons Casey and wife Lauren Andronici Enyeart. Portland, Oregon, and Aaron Enyeart, Beaverton, Oregon, great-grandchildren Amanda Fleming, Levi Fleming, Kyle Fleming, Jacob Pletcher, Matthew Pletcher, Jesse Pletcher, and Meron Enyeart; her sister Helen Anderson, Mankato; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Celebration of life service for Martha Marie Morris were held Sunday, May 6, 2007, at 2:00 p.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Steven Little officiating. Music was provided by Janelle Greene, organist. Casket bearers were: Mark Fleming, Amanda Fleming, Levi Fleming, Alan Ross, Casey Enyeart, and Aaron Enyeart. Interment was in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to Church or Solomon Valley Hospice, in care of the Mortuary. Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
