Roma N. Grout, 86, Mankato, died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at Republic County Hospital in Belleville, Kansas

Mrs. Grout was born Roma Nadine Nelson in Mankato, Kansas, on November 14, 1924. Her parents were Otis M. Nelson and Katharine M. (Russell) Nelson. She was a homemaker.

Roma attended kindergarten in the basement of the Mankato YMCA building; District 76 Grade School and Mankato Jr-Sr High School, graduating with the class of 1942. Following her high school graduation she attended Brown-Mackie College, Salina, in 1942.

She worked at the OPA Ration office during World War II and later helped her mother-in-law operate the Annex Restaurant in Mankato.

Roma was a faithful member of Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato. She served as President of the United Methodist Women and was a devoted member of the Sarah Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn Grout Jr. in 2000; a daughter, Diane Hart, in 1990; and her brother, Dallas Nelson, in 2003.

Survivors include son Jerry and wife Pat of Mankato, Kansas; daughter Jeannette and husband Robert Elliott of Columbia, Missouri; grandchildren Marc Grout, Sharon Grout Denholm, Jason Elliott, Jeremy Elliott, Alisha Elliott Geeslin, Michael Hart; great-grandchildren Matthew Denholm, Jacob Denholm, Zachary Denholm, Nolan Grout, Jackson Elliott, Kate Elliott.

The Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, March 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Harmony United Methodist Church in Mankato, with Reverend Gerry Sharp officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato. Melby Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given in care of Harmony United Methodist Church.
