Charlotte (Oglevie) Roe

Charlotte (Oglevie) Roe, of Mankato, Kansas, was born October 7, 1920, at Otego, Kansas, to Frank and Daisy (Hassinger) Oglevie and died January 20, 2011, at the Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 15 days.

Charlotte attended Burr Oak grade school and graduated from Burr Oak high school in 1937, before attending Beauty School in Salina, Kansas. She owned and operated a beauty shop in the 1930’s in Mankato.

On November 28, 1940, Charlotte was united in marriage to Lawrence Roe. A few months later, they moved to Boise, Idaho, where she worked in a beauty shop.

After Lawrence was drafted and later stationed in Newburgh, New York, she joined him. While living there, a daughter, Nancy, was added to the family.

After they returned to Mankato, Charlotte worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 32 ½ years. She retired in May of 1976.

She spent her life caring for people, including their parents, aunts, uncles and dear friends. She would make herself available to anyone who needed assistance.

Charlotte did quite a lot of traveling, and had visited all 50 of the United States as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Charlotte did this for about six weeks, just before her illness, which the family will always cherish. She was a member of the Mankato American Legion Auxiliary, and the Harmony United Methodist Church.

Charlotte is preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Lawrence in 2001.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy (Roe) Cortner of Ft. Worth, Texas; two grandchildren – Staci and husband Troy Craft and Nicole and David Benker; eight great-grandchildren – Chaz Tine, Danica Tine, Payton Benker, Meagan Caton, Zachary Caton, Tyler Caton, Ashley Craft, and Austin Craft; and two great-great-grandchildren – Makenzee Yarbraugh and Audio Craft, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Charlotte’s life will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Laura Fricker officiating. The organist will be Pat Grout and the congregation is to sing “Amazing Grace” and “Precious Memories.” Casket bearers will be Troy Craft, David Benker, Tyler Caton, Zachary Caton, Chaz Tine, Mike Harris and James Harris. Interment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to Jewell County Hospital, Mankato, Kansas.
